CONTACTS & YOUR NUMBER

How Peek handles contacts and texts.

This page answers the questions people actually ask us. The Privacy Policy is the full legal document, and if the two ever differ, the policy applies.

I received a text with a Peek link

Either a member sent it from their own phone, or a member directly asked Peek to send it for them. A text sent by Peek comes from Peek's own number and names the member who asked. Reply STOP and you will not receive another one.

Peek does not send marketing or notification texts. The only other texts Peek sends are one-time codes when someone signs in. Receiving a link does not create an account for you, and nothing about you is shown to other members.

What happens when a member shares contacts

Contact access is optional. By default, names and numbers stay on the member's phone. The app scrambles each number and sends only a short fragment of it to Peek, which answers with possible matches, and the match is finished on the phone. Nothing from the address book is stored on Peek's servers in this mode.

Some versions of the app ask for separate agreement to upload contact names and numbers in encrypted form. These are used to find friends and to deliver picks to people who have not joined yet, and are kept for up to 30 days. Earlier versions of Peek uploaded contact names and scrambled numbers, including for people who are not on Peek.

Contacts are used to find people who are already on Peek, to suggest friends, and to show contacts as pick options. They are not shown to other members and are not used for anything else.

Picks for people who are not on Peek yet

A pick for someone who has not joined is kept for up to 30 days together with an encrypted reference to that contact. It is delivered only if that person joins and verifies their phone number. If they do not, it expires and is removed.

How long it is kept

Encrypted uploads are kept for up to 30 days, or until the member disconnects contacts or deletes their account, whichever comes first. Records uploaded by earlier versions stay until the member deletes their account or asks us to delete them by email. When contacts are disconnected, friend suggestions from them stop.

Remove my number

You do not need a Peek account. Email support with the phone number. We promptly delete it from the active database and add it to a suppression list so that it is not stored again from future contact uploads.

Email support about my number

School and grade

Members choose their school and grade when they sign up, and that choice is not checked. School polls and school friend lists need a one-time verification with a school email address or a student ID photo, renewed every 180 days. Everything else works without it.

A student ID photo is stored encrypted for up to 14 days for review and then deleted. Peek keeps the result of the review, not the photo.

Deleting an account

Delete your account in the app under Settings. The account is deactivated right away and permanently deleted after 5 days. Signing in during those 5 days restores it.

After deletion, Peek keeps anonymized usage statistics for 120 days and a scrambled phone fingerprint for one year to prevent reward abuse. Neither can be used to contact you.

Everything else

Peek does not buy or sell personal data. The Privacy Policy covers everything Peek collects, how it is used, and your rights.
